Memorial
Day
Memorial Day
is a United States Federal Holiday that is observed
on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as
Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men
and women who have died in military service to their
country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who
died during the American Civil War. After World War
I, it was expanded to include those who died in any
war or military action.
Memorial Day has now become a day of reflection and
remembrance. It is a day to remember all of our
Fallen Heroes from all of the wars. It is a day to
think about the families that will forever grieve
for their lost loved one. It is a day to be thankful
to those who have served and made the ultimate
sacrifice. They fought and died to win the freedom
and democracy that we Americans cherish so dearly.
They also fought and died to bring that same freedom
and democracy that we enjoy to the people of other
countries.
