IN MEMORY OF A GREAT CUBAN PATRIOT,  JORGE MAS CANOSA (1939-1997)

The  members of CAMCO remember with deep respect and admiration the  great Cuban patriot,  Jorge Mas Canosa, on the 11th anniversary of his death.  Speaking of Mas Canosa, our chairman, retired Major General Erneido A. Oliva, who shared political activities with Jorge when they were newly exiled in being among the five members of the Cuban Representation in Exile (RECE),  said: “Jorge was my dear friend and a truly outstanding and dedicated leader in the long struggle against Fidel Castro dictatorship; his courage, charisma, motivation and leadership were unrivaled."

In the eulogy to his older brother, Raul Mas Santos perfectly depicted the Jorge that we all knew.  Raul said: “Jorge managed to generate intense loyalty and love among those he considered his friends. In the Bible, Jesus tells us that ''Greater love hath no one than this: that he lay down his life for his friends.'' Jorge was the type of person who would have gladly laid down his own life for the sake of a good friend, not to mention his beloved Cuba. And as I look out onto this crowd, I see the faces of dozens, perhaps even hundreds, of individuals who would have gladly done the same for him, who would have gladly accepted his suffering without hesitation. That, my friends, is greatness, indeed...”

Jorge came to the United States in 1960 as a penniless Cuban exile fleeing Fidel Castro's regime. With hard work and intellect he became a highly successful entrepeneur heading a multimillion dollar business. During his life he was hugely popular among the Cuban community and the most influential Cuban American in the  United  States. Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W.  Bush, and Bill Clinton consulted him whenever a matter of Cuban policy was on the table. CAMCO salutes Mas Canosa's passion for people, his irreproachable family life and for his dedication to bring freedom and democracy to Cuba.
